The most deadly surgical fever was Pyemia, which was pus in the blood. Another disease or ¨surgical fever¨ was Osteomyelitis an inflammation in the bone. The most common was Hospital Gangrene. If you had Hospital Gangrene a black spot about the size of a dime would appear on the wound. It spread quickly and the surgeon could do nothing about it.
